“ Words. I’m surrounded by thousands of words. Cathedral. Mayonnaise. Pomegranate. Mississippi. Neapolitan. Hippopotamus. Silky. Terrifying. Iridescent. Tickle. Sneeze. Wish. Worry.” That’s what goes on in Melody’s head. She is very smart. No one knows that. Melody is eleven and has never spoken a word in her life. You know how you have videos of you walking and saying your first words when you were a baby? There are no videos of Melody doing that. They aren’t there because they didn’t record it. Melody never took her first steps or said her first words. She has been told one too many times how her brain is not capable of retaining information. One doctor even told her mom to send her to a community where she would be “taken care of”. He didn’t think she was good enough to be in a regular society. Boy, was he mistaken.
I really liked Out of My Mind. It was enjoyable. It was written very well so I could feel Melody’s pain, hurt, happiness and joy. This book would have me laughing, crying, and smiling all in the same 30 seconds. This was a heart warming book that really made me think.
I thought the message in the book was to not look at your disabilities but what you can accomplish. Melody proved to her inclusion classes (regular 5th grade classes) that she can ace tests, that she can even get better grades than some 6th graders. Melody was also determined. Melody’s determination to succeed inspired me to not give up so easily.
I would recommend this novel to 5th graders and up. This book was written on an emotional base. The author was able to build up the emotion even more, making some elements of the book difficult to read and appreciate among young readers. There was no concerning language so it would be good for this age group. Overall, I would give this book four and half stars out of five because in every book there is room for improvement.
If you’re searching for heart warming book, Out of My Mind is the book that would end your hunt.
