Deborah Butterfield
Contributed by: Mary Anne Porto   on 3/11/2008

In art class, our teacher showed us a video of Deborah Butterfield's sculptures. They're unique because they look like wood, but are made of metal. This is how it works. First, the sculpture is created from wood. Then, the wood is covered with a ceramic-shell molding material and the wood is burnt during the firing process. The shell is taken to the wax-pattern department where wax is heated to 200 degrees Fahrenheit. Molten Bronze is poured over the sculpture and it is cooled. Finally the sculpture is finished. I tried imitating this, using telephone wire, it's HARD!!!
