Some of my favorite books of all time fall under the label, the Shadow Children sequence by Margaret Peterson Haddix (author of
Running Out of Time
). Though I've only read three out of the six or seven, I've fallen in love with them already. The three I have read are
Among the Hidden, Among the Impostors,
and
Among the Betrayed.
The sequence starts out with young Luke Garner, a third child forbidden by the Population Police, has to deal with staying inside all the time in order for no one to see him otherwise he's as good as dead. He gets restless until he discovers that there is another third child living in one of the nearby houses. This third child is working to set up a rally for third children everywhere. Sadly, she and all the others at the rally are killed.
The second book starts with Luke going to a boarding school with a fake I.D. There, he is Lee Grant. There are lots of other third children at the school and they all meet every night in the woods beyond the school. But unfortunatly, one of the kids, Jason,is working for thePopulationPolice. Jason and another girl, Nina, are arrested.
The third book begins with Nina Idi being in jail. She is asked by the Population Police to betray a group of third children in order to save herself. She decides against it and helps them escape the prison. She goes back to her old school where she looks for Lee. As it turns out, the whole arrest, and the temptation of betrayal was just a plot to find out if she was loyal to other third children. They discover that she is loyal and she decides that she will do anything to help illeagal children get their rights too.
That's it for all the Shadow Children books I've read, but I really enjoyed them and I hope that you will consider them for your reading list.
