Summer of Service
Contributed by: Tony Yin on 8/14/2008

Do you ever feel really bored during the summer? Stuck athome once or twice with nothing to do except watching TV and playing computergames? Well, here is an opportunity for teens ages 14 through 17 to experiencethe world by attending a summer camp for three and a half weeks. Summer ofService is a camp sponsored by Americorps NCCC. This allows teens to have achance to help out the community at the same time having a blast.

This summer, I joined the 100-member crew of hard-working,fun, and positive individuals ready to have a great time. Anyways, we just goaround to communities, parks, food banks, and elementary schools in and aroundDenver doing community service projects and help out. With the community alwayshelping us, it is time that we as kids to give back to the community in a waythat will be remembered forever. Basically this is almost like a incredibly funsummer job because upon completion of the programs, participants receives a$500 pension for doing work around the community.

Other than getting paid, this is just like a summer camp. All of the participants get to live in a room with a roommate on a collegecampus and we eat cafeteria food for all of the meals. I believe the best partof the camp is making new friends. Out of the 100 energetic and friendlyindividuals, surely a couple of them will be your best friends forever. Afterspending three and a half weeks enjoying myself, I made tons of new friendsthat I would have never met before. I am so glad to meet them because truly someof them are almost like my best friends.

After working at different places around Denver doing allkinds of work from pulling weeds, painting billboards, cutting down trees, making trails, and sorting out food boxes, we come back to campus to relax and havefun. We get to travel all around Denver for extra programs that will alwaysbrighten our day. Denver Zoo, Dragon Boat Festival, three days of camping,Rocky Mountain National Park, rock climbing, river rafting, Lakeside AmusementPark, and a lot of swimming allowed us to be entertained while helping thecommunity.

In the end, if you want to have tons of fun, make myriads ofnew friends, help out the community, and get an extra 500 dollars on top of allthat, then you have to join Americorps NCCC Summer of Service next year. It isa decision that I will never regret making. Just go on the Internet to findeven more fascinating facts about this camp.
