A look "Behind the Museum Door"
Contributed by: Felicia Pichulo on 5/4/2008

Have you ever been to a museum and found something so great that you wanted to see it again? This book of poetry will fulfill your wish to imagine that you're there time and time again. Behind the Museum Door is a book written by numerous authors that came together to share their experiences and thoughts about museums they have visited and exhibits they have loved.
With 14 poems all written in different styles, this book has something special for everyone. For instance, there is a humorous poem written to a dinosaur fossil, a poem written to the tune of a popular Christmas carol, and a few touching poems dedicated to the past ways of life. My favorite poem is To the Skeleton of a Dinosaur in the Museum, written by Lilian Moore. This silly poem is written as a letter to a set of Brontosaurus bones. I enjoyed this poem because it made me laugh to think about having a conversation with a long-dead reptile.
Behind the Museum Door is an Abrams Book for Young Readers and was published in 2007. The poems were selected by Lee Bennett Hopkins and the illustrator is Stacey Dressen-McQueen. I would recommend this book to readers from ages 8 and up because some of the selections have difficult words and meanings. While reading this book, memories of time I spent in the museum where I live came flooding into my mind causing me to want to visit the museum again soon! With colorful images and a unique collection of poems, this book will stay on my bookshelf for years to come.
