Build to Last
Contributed by: Tony Yin on 5/6/2008

Build to Last is written by George Sullivan and this descriptive book contains some very clear detail about some of America's most difficult, famous, and interesting buildings. This book not only features famous skyscrapers and bridges such as the Empire State Building or the Golden Gate Bridge, it also contains some unknown structures such as the Hoosac Tunnel and Flatiron Building. Structures of all kinds are included in this book. These engineering feats feature tunnels, bridges, skyscrapers, arcs, dams, railways, and highways.

The total 17 amazing engineering feats are broken up into five groups by chronicle years in which it was built. The periods are 1790-1850, 1850-1910, 1920-1940, 1950-1965, and 1990-present. These projects range from the Erie Canal built in 1817 to the City Tunnel No. 3 which is expected to finish in 2020. The author pays homage to the people who designed, built, and completed each engineering marvel, including the Transcontinental Railroad, Hoover Dam, Golden Gate Bridge, Jefferson National Expansion Memorial Arch, Cascade Tunnel, and the Sears Tower. Inside of each description includes many pictures, artist renderings, and a few highlighted facts like location, cost, and size.

I think this book is very well written and gives readers a clue of what is happening on and off of the construction. We know the materials used, the danger during the construction, and how the projects is completed with notes on the new equipments used that has never been used before. If you are a reader who is very interested in all the amazing structures of the United States of America, then you should definitely read this descriptive book.
