DIVE into Alice The Brave
Contributed by: Haley Rogers on 4/26/2009

Everybody is afraid of something, and that's definitely the case for Alice in Alice the Brave. All her friends are excited for a summer of fun, and relaxing at the pool, but that's not the case for Alice. Alice is about to go into 8 th grade, and is terrified of water, especially water over her head. All summer long Alice makes up excuses for why she can't go to the pool. Then one day she finally gets up the courage to join her friends at the pool, and while there something horrible happens. She chooses to lie on the side of the pool, until all the boys in her class try to throw her in. Unfortunately she makes a fool of herself by screaming and crying as they try to toss her in. After this episode she decides she has to learn how to swim, no matter what. But will she be able to overcome her horrible fear of water? Find out in Alice the Brave.

This book had a good message, and was about something kids can relate to; everybody is afraid of something. It is a short read, only 130 pages, and is not very complicated. It has a simple plot which at times leaves the reader wanting more action. It may be a good summer reading book for kids anywhere from 10 to 12 years old.

Alice the Brave is by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor, and published by Aladdin Mix. It is a 130 page chapter book, perhaps something to consider this summer. If you're ready to DIVE into Alice the Brave, then head to a library or bookstore near you.
