Contributed by: Lauren McCulley on 6/25/2009

Do you love sports, and have always wondered how the balls of all the sports came to be? Well, now yours chance to find out with Balls by Michael J. Rosen, illustrated by John Margeson.

Published in 2006 by Darby Creek Publishing, this is a great 72 page non-fiction book that tells about numerous balls including, basketballs, soccer balls, footballs volleyballs, tennis balls, handballs, golf balls, table tennis balls, and other balls. There is great information for each ball, including how they are made, why they look the way do, and some weird but amazing facts about their history. For example, did you know that early South American cultures invented a game like soccer in which the ball symbolized the sun? There are also many other amazing facts about the actual game, not just the balls that are used to play them.

This book has many ways in order to take a fun approach to non-fiction. One of them is that before you are introduced to each ball, there's a riddle for you to try to guess which ball comes next.

The sections for each balls share certain text features. For each ball there is a "Ball of Fame" which shows amazing feats done with the ball, and "The Inside Scoop" which shows characteristics of each ball. In some sections, there's a "Quote-A-Ball." "Quote-A-Balls" are quotes from famous athletes who use that ball.

If you are bored over this summer, and are looking for something to do, why don't you go to your local library or book store to get a copy of this fantastic book!
