American Girl Makes Hit Movie
Contributed by: Rachel Faulkner on 7/2/2008

You're sitting in a dark, deserted theater, waiting for the film to begin. Distantly, you can hear the wind howling and the sound effects from the movie next door - creepy! You begin to wonder , "What am I doing here?" and consider leaving. But then the movie begins, and instantly, you are transported to the world of Kit Kittredge and the Great Depression of the twentieth century.
I found myself in the same position. I was invited to see the new American Girl production "Kit Kittredge, an American Girl" directed by Patricia Rozema. Let me tell you, my expectations were low. I have seen the other minor movies that American Girl has produced off of their hit books, and they were dripping in the typical mediocrity of lesser known companies. Yet this movie seems to be the largest production so far.
The movie has a star-studded cast, starring Oscar nominee Abigail Breslind, also seen in "Little Miss Sunshine" and "Nim's Island". The film also included Joan Cusack (In & Out, Working Girl), Glenne Headly (Dirty Rotten Scoundrals), Wallace Shawn (The Princess Bride, The Incredibles) and Max Thieriot (Jumper, Nancy Drew).
Abigail Breslind plays Kit, a spunky, free-spirited girl growing up in the heart of the Great Depression. Her dreams include becoming a published columnist for the Cincinnati paper, and she is a skilled writer. When her father loses his job and moves to Chicago to find work, Kit and her mother are forced to open up their house for borders to come in, including a crazy librarian and a magician. Meanwhile, they employ two young hobos living in the nearest hobo camp, two seemingly trustworthy boys named Will and County. But things are not all as they are made out to be, and Kit is placed in a situation of confusion and hate as she and her friend Ruthie battle the hobo discrimination so commonly seen during the Depression. But are they doing the right thing?
This heartwarming moview was truly a treat to watch, and it is a fantastic production. "Kit Kittredge: An American Girl" opens in theaters July 2. Go see it if you dare, but be warned, it will have you on the edge of your seat.
