Yes, we all saw those whimsical commercials for the next best Pixar movie. I thought it would be just another one of those failed promises that the cinema industry never ceases to deliver, but no. The movie "Up" was nothing less than a stroke of pure Disney/Pixar genius. It combined the incredible graphics that we expect form Pixar, along with the whimsical story lines that Disney delivers. The story starts in what seems to be a 1950's rendition of New York City. Two young kids become close friends based on their similar goal...flying an airplane all the way to Paradise Falls in South America together. The movie briefly shows them growing up, getting married to each other, and growing old together. Eventually, Ellie (Elie Docter), the main character Carl's wife, dies and he is left without her and left with too many memories that he was not able to make. Carl Fredricksen (Ed Asner), now a grumpy old man, decides to go to Paradise Falls via his house with balloons. Wait, house balloons? Yes, you read it correctly, he attaches thousands of helium filled balloons to his house. He uses the expertise that he gained from selling balloons to fly down to South America while staying in the comfort of his own home. There is only one problem, a small Boy Scout hitches a ride by clinging on to Carl's house. Russell (Jordan Nagai), the Boy-Scout-stowaway, then flies on with Carl as they encounter several obstacles on the way. Carl and Russell meet two friends on their journey, Dug (Bob Petersen), the ignorant talking dog, and "Kevin," a tall, rare, female bird. The four get into all sorts of trouble and learn a lot of valuable information about themselves along the jouney. This movie guarantees you a sense of fulfillment as you leave the theater, and a couple of hysterical laughs along the way. I had the privilege of watching the movie in Real-D, 3-D. The imagery was impeccable and made you feel like you were a part of the movie the whole time, almost to the point where you wanted to reach in and grab certain things from the screen. This movie was rated PG, but it provided humor that both children,and their parents could enjoy. This film was a smash hit to me, but maybe you should pay a visit to your local movie theater and be swept away by "Up"!
