"My Sister's Keeper" is a Keeper
Contributed by: Bailey Cross on 6/26/2009

Grade: B+

When the tight-knit Fitzgerald family learned that their two year old daughter Kate (Sofia Vassilieva) had a rare case of leukemia, their sound world was forever altered. Sara (Cameron Diaz), Brian (Jason Patric) and four year old Jesse (Evan Ellingson) would do whatever it took to save Kate's life, even if it meant bringing another human being into the equation. From the moment Anna (Abigail Breslin) was brought into the world, she was doing just that; keeping her sister Kate alive. The product of genetic engineering, Anna, the perfect match for Kate, was pushed into a life filled with painful bone marrow transplants, operations, and hospital visits. Every time something was taken from Anna's body, it gave Kate the most precious gift she could ask for. The gift of more time.

Now, at age 11, Anna is no longer OK with being Kate's donor. It was all well and fine when it was just blood, platelets and bone marrow being taken from her, but when a kidney is needed to keep Kate's failing body working, Anna has reached the end of the line. Suing her parents for the rights to her own body, Anna steps into a world that she didn't know existed. She unintentionally tears her family apart as they take sides in a battle between Anna's freedom and Kate's life. She opens old wounds and creates new ones. Most importantly, Anna discovers that she has a voice, and if she only would speak up, she will be heard.

Based on the bestselling novel by Jodi Picoult, My Sister's Keeper debates moral and ethical issues while exploring the depth of a mother's love, the will of a young girl, and how life goes on. My Sister's Keeper is rated PG-13 for good reason. It shows some thematic content, some disturbing images, sensuality, language and brief teen drinking, so I do not recommend seeing this movie if you are under the age of 13. Good Job. I've never heard of the movie or the book before, but I will hold on reading it or watching it until I'm 13. Great review, too.
