Author Cracks Up the Crowd

On March 21, Daniel Handler, also known as Lemony Snicket , gave a lecture at the Newman Center for the Performing Arts. His appearance was part of the Pen & Podium Series sponsored by The Denver Post. The series had 5 authors come and speak this year.

Daniel Handler is a very funny person. Throughout the lecture he kept the audience laughing. He began his lecture with some news stories from the Denver area but added his own funny twist. Then Handler told some stories about his life. Following the lecture there was a question and answer time. When a teenager came up to ask a question she said "Let me just start by saying me and my friend are huge fans..." "I have seen huger," Handler replied.

Daniel Handler used the pen name Lemony Snicket for 'The Series of Unfortunate Events' series of kids' books. A pen name is a name you use when you write. Daniel only uses Lemony Snicket when he is writing kids' books. He uses his real name when he writes adult books. He told a funny story about how he got his pen name. One day he called the city to complain that people were giving out balloon animals at the park and also blame them for trying to make birds die by choking on little pieces of popped balloons. The worker asked for his name and he did not want to give her his real name because he was in the process of writing a book and did not want his real name involved in the complaining. So when they asked him he said "Lemony Snicket," After a long pause she asked, "Is that spelled like it sounds?" Yes he answered and then asked her to read it back to him. That way he would know how to spell it.

Lemony Snicket's books are dark and gloomy. So in the Q&A a fan asked if Handler was a pessimist or a optimist. In reply he answered "I'm a realist. I hope for the best but I expect the worst."
