Winning Children's Book Author Mary Downing Hahn was at the CCIRA (Colorado Council International Reading Association) signing books. With a history of three William Allen White Children's Book Awards and one Scott O'Dell award, the new CCBA (Colorado Children's Book Award) for her book "Deep and Dark and Dangerous" is just another addition to her wall of fame. Even though 'Deep and Dark and Dangerous' has the CCBA, Mary Downing Hahn's personal favorite book of her own is ' Stepping On the Cracks' because in the writing process she brought back many memories from her childhood.
When I, Joey Dearing, had the chance to interview her, I found out many things. Mary lives in Maryland with her two cats, Oscar and Rufus. Oscar is an orange tabby while his brother, Rufus, sports a straight black coat. Mary's personal favorite book currently is the 'Invention of Huge Cabret'.Mary gets her story ideas from childhood memories and images. 'Closed for the Season' was inspired by an old abandoned amusement park a while away from her house. However, 'Stepping On the Cracks' was based mostly off of Mary's own personal memories. Mary said she has written about 35 books, but 5 or 6 have never been published. She started writing in 1979 and is working on a teen novel currently. She has plenty more story ideas coming!
Her advice to an aspiring writer? Read and write."I wouldn't be a writer without reading." Mary claimed. "And, of course, write. Maybe keep a diary or journal because you don't want to push yourself to write everyday; that would be much too hard."So, keep writing and reading and maybe you, too, could win an CCBA!
