Nine-year-old Jude Burst, of New Orleans glances at the clock reading 10:20:16 just as he sprints across the finish line of the 3,000 meter race in Track. This is a new world record that was previously set by Coley Candaele in 1980 with a time of10:36. Burst demolished the record by 16 seconds on May 22, 2010 at the annual "Meet Under Lights"! Last week I was given the amazing chance to interview this young athlete. Burst started Running at the age of 7. December 2007 was when Burst competed in his first fun run, a two-mile race, and completed it in 13:46!
When asked what first got him started on running he simply answered, "Well, my friends were running and I wanted to do it too." He chose running because when he first started he liked it and also told me, "I can always be improving and getting faster."
Burst's dad reads book and then figures out workouts for Jude. Jude also runs for a Track Club known as the New Orleans "Metro Stars", part of the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) Track Team. He does a lot of running, training and competing but he says he never gets tired of it. "I like how I keep getting faster and better so I don't want to quit," Burst states.
Jude Burst is not only a star on the Track but also the fields and court. Burst plays soccer, basketball, and baseball as well as track. All sports are taken very seriously with him. After hearing about all these different sports he does I wondered if they ever conflicted with each other and Burst replied, "not really but sometimes I have to choose one."Besides sports other interests of Jude's is to have collections, he likes to collect coins. Jude also likes to read books. Before leaving the house for a meet Jude always makes sure to have his iPod with him to listen to before he competes. His iPod is filled with Rock Songs. Race Day. A lot happens during these long, tiring days. Before Jude runs he has a banana, a glass of milk, and 2 Cup of Gold energy bars. His recovery food usually includes a type of drink that tastes like Gatorade (according to Jude) but is known as Vitalyte.
Before a race Burst sets a time or a goal for each race and then tries to beat it. His family comes to all his races and is very supportive. To warm-up Jude stretches and does plyometrics. Plyometricsis a type of exercise made to produce strong movements and improve the functions of the nervous system; it's used generally to improve performance in sports.
Jude has two younger sisters who are seven and three years old. He has a cousin who also runs. The person Jude most admires is Hicham El Guerrouj from Morocco. Burst looks up to Guerrouj because he holds world records too, and they both run the same races. Burst also runs races with his dad. He has a gift of running,but still works hard to achieve success by diet, training, and coaching.
Obviously Jude Burst is an outstanding athlete and person.
