Jeffco Action Center in Lakewood, CO provides donated items such as food and clothes for those in need. It is very important to donate to organizations like this, since so many people depend on them. This is the reason I decided to do a food drive for my Bronze Award, the highest award a Junior Girl Scout can earn. The Bronze Award signifies that you have made a difference in your community.
"Providing an immediate response to basic human needs and promoting pathways to self-sufficiency in Jefferson County since 1968", according to the agency, Jeffco Action Center (JAC) is a private, nonprofit agency. Since 1968, they have been providing items for those in need in Jefferson County. The people they help are grateful when they receive an item, knowing they are not alone. About 150 families visit JAC daily.
"When people leave today, something [has] happened." says Mag Strittmatter, the Executive Director. "Meaning they've had a chance to visit with a counselor, have someone listen to what's going on in their lives, have someone talk with them on how they can walk through that and make constructive progress, and they also get to leave with stuff."
The economy has been a big impact on JAC. More people are donating and more people are receiving items. The different seasons also change the items needed. For instance, JAC just finished their back-to-school project. They also get most of their funding from individual contributions.
Jeffco Action Center has three type sof programs; Intervention, Prevention, and Connection. Intervention is when JAC helps families and individuals who are often in a situation where they have to make a decision to pay their rent/ mortgage payment or paying for food, medicine, or utilities. Prevention is when JAC helps families before they get into they get into a situation where they need help from the intervention programs. Connection is when JAC partners up with other agencies to provide services and referrals to clients.

You can also donate online at http://www.givingfirst.org/ . There is also a Pathway Partners Program that allows you to donate monthly. Plus, JAC participates in the Enterprize Zone program. Another good way to get food and other items to donate is by having a drive.
During my food drive, people in my neighbor hood received a flyer asking to donate imperishable food by leaving it in a plastic bag on their door step at a certain time. Once the food was left, my family and I went around collecting the food. Then, I delivered it to Jeffco Action Center. To have your own food drive, you staple flyers to plastic bags that were donated from the grocery store and rubberband them to people's doorknobs. Then go and pick up the bags filled with food and deliver them to the local food bank. A food drive is a great way to get your community together. During my food drive, 399 packages of food were donated which was 214.5 pounds of food. I would like to thank my subdivision for this. I would not have accomplished this without you. I also earned my Bronze Award. Thanks you!
