We have all heard of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra and some of us have heard of Mark Wood, the award winning composer and energetic, electric violinist. My school, Carmody, and ten other Jefferson County middle schools had the honor and privilege of performing with Mr. Wood.
As a bonus, we were all taught three new songs to play in front of our family and friends. My school played Viva La Vida and Strings Will Rock You. At the end of the night, all the middle schools came together on one stage and played Hoedown. We all felt the music through our veins and even some of the students started dancing. Not once did Mark Wood make us feel like kids, he treated all of us with respect and even tried to learn all of our names. That's quite a task since there were over 450 kids in one room.
During our practice time, we got to ask Mr. Wood some questions. A student from Bear Creek K-8 asked," What was your first instrument"? He replied "The Violia". Another student from Creighton Middle School asked "What made you want to play Rock-N-Roll music"? He said, "I played all the classical music and I wanted to play what I listen to, it was rock-n-roll". The funniest question of the night came from a teacher and she wanted to know "Why is your hair so long"? He replied, smiling "I like to get down with the rock music and wave my hair all around". And he did.
I would like to thank all the teachers, music centers, parent volunteers, and Mr Mark Wood for the once in a life time opportunity. I had no idea that we could play all of these songs and sound that great. Just think what we learned in one night of this workshop could change our lives forever. We all set a goal and did it. If we as students could do that all the time, the world would be ours.
