Which Child is Actually Cursed? Plus Online Extras

“Harry Potter and the Cursed Child: Parts One and Two” is a book by 3 different authors. J.K. Rowling, John Tiffany, and Jack Thorne worked together to make this one of the best books in the Harry Potter series.

This book is extremely different than every other book in the Harry Potter series (7 books) because it is written like a script for a play. In fact, the day that they book became first available was the first day that the play was performed in London. This means that although the book is 320 pages, every time someone talks in the book, their name is put before what they say. Instead of chapters, there are acts and scenes. For example, instead of just the title of the new chapter, there is the act and scene number.

This time, Harry Potter returns to the headlines with a wife (Ginny, Ron’s sister) and 2 children - Albus and James. They are sent to Hogwarts when they are of age and are sorted into houses (by the sorting hat, of course). James joins Gryffindor, but Albus is a Slytherin. After this, Albus overhears Harry talking to Amos Diggory, fallen Cedric Diggory’s father. Harry lies to Amos that there are no time reversers in existence, even though the Ministry has recently taken one from a thief. Albus feels bad for Amos so he, Scorpius Malfoy (his best friend!), and Delphi, (Amos’s niece) break into the Minister of Magic’s office and steal the time reverser from an angry bookshelf.

They then escape the angry snack cart manager by jumping off the moving Hogwarts Express! They travel back in time and stop Cedric Diggory from winning the first task of the Tri-Wizard Tournament (from the Goblet of Fire book), but the only change is that Ron and Hermione never marry, which leads to Rose (a Gryffindor friend of Albus and James) never being born. So, if you meddle with a time reverser in the world of Harry Potter, then even the slightest change of time can create the largest difference in the present. Also, a time reverser only gives you 5 minutes in the past and also hurts one of the users. For example, when Albus and Scorpius use the time reverser, Albus ends up with a broken arm afterwards.

This is a chapter book without pictures that I do highly recommend for anyone who liked the original Harry Potter series. I think that readers aged 9 and above would enjoy the plot of this story. If you have not read the rest of the Harry Potter series or just 2 or 3 books of it, then you would not understand this book much. You would not fully understand the story behind the story.

In addition to the story, there is a special extra, Pottermore.com. This website is run by J.K. Rowling, the author of Harry Potter. You can even get sorted into houses by setting up an account and taking a test (for teenagers and above)! J.K. Rowling has special stories here that exist nowhere else! One example of a special story is the tale of the Ilvermorny magic school, which describes the general history and beginnings of this school of witchcraft and wizardry.

At this website, you also have a chance to look at interesting facts about the house you have been sorted into. You can find out much, much more on the website. Good Luck!
