Have you ever been skiing in the back country? If you haven’t, it is a great way to enjoy our Colorado Mountains. Back country skiing is different than downhill skiing because you use a different kind of ski. Unlike downhill skis, only the toe of your boot is attached to the ski. The skis are also thinner and lighter than downhill skis. One exciting thing to do in Colorado’s back country is to go on a hut trip. There are many huts throughout the Rocky Mountains that are accessible by ski. A popular spot outside of Winter Park is the High Lonesome Hut. The ski in is about two and a half miles to the hut. The terrain is mostly flat with a few up hills and down hills every now and then.Preparing for a hut trip takes a lot of work. You must carry almost everything you need for the days that you are at the hut. You must carry all of the food. You should also bring a sleeping bag. Another thing you will probably want to bring is extra clothing. Make sure that you bring everything you need, but don’t over pack. Remember, you need to carry everything into the hut!”It was like an adventure!” said Zoe Kearney, age eight. Going on a hut trip is a great way to spend time with friends and family. If you are looking for a fun and adventures thing to do outside, a hut trip is a great way to spend your time.
