Little Mermaid: Behind the ScenesAshley AcheeOn Friday the twenty fourth I was lucky enough to attend the Little Mermaid gala, performance, and after party! I even got to chat with a cast member! The gala was incredible! When you walked in you were greeted by “mer-people” and a band performed various songs from the Little Mermaid soundtrack. After eating a dinner, we walked into the Ellie Caulkins Opera House to watch the play. It had the most amazing costumes I had ever seen, I thought the fish costumes were especially cool because they were neon and fish-like at the same time. The vocals were amazing! Ariel, Sierra Boggess, had a very strong voice that went well with the rest of the cast. When the play finished, we went to the after party where a few members of the cast appeared. I got to talk with J.J Singleton, who played Flounder, Ariel’s fish friend. When asked how he had gotten started in musical theatre he replied, “I was always performing and stuff for my parents. Then I got an audition for Lion King…” J.J. also played Young Simba in the Lion King. I also asked what it like working with the cast of the Little Mermaid. “They’re really nice. I’m having a lot of fun.” Overall, the Little Mermaid was a great play that can appeal to any audience!
