Have you ever wondered how each state joined the Union? In the book, Quilt of States, published by National Geographic, you learn how each state came to be a state. The author, Adrienne Yorinks, sewed a quilt block for every state using fabrics with prints like the state flower and other pictures. On every page there is the state’s quilt block and a paragraph on how that state joined together with the other states to make America. What I liked about this book was that each of these paragraphs was written by a librarian from that state. What I didn’t like about this book was some of the quilt blocks. Almost every one displays a cow or a pig. What I would want to know is why she chose the pictures she did. I think she should have put captions explaining how the pictures relate to the state. For example, why does Colorado have a computer on their quilt? I think this 114-paged book is for 1st grade through 6th grade.
