Recently I had the honor of meeting poet/writer Jerry Spinelli and talking with him about his latest book, Love, Stargirl. Mr. Spinelli is a wonderful person with a great story in his life. The book is the sequel to the award winner Stargirl, which is one of my favorite books. Mr. Spinelli talks about it. “I based Stargirl loosly on my wife, Eileen Spinelli. Love, Stargirl was sort of an accident. Eileen told me to write a little sequel and it…sort of spilled on the pages.” Mr. Spinelli alsoencouraged me tolook into creating a Stargirl Society, which are mostly an Eastern tradition but canbemoved to theWest. Stargirl Socitiesleafe money on the sidewalk for people, write friendly notes and stick them inlockers, and generally act just likeStargirl.Next the talk turned to Mr. Spinelli’s past. He said that he did not like to read when he was a child, and thereforedid not have very manyfavorite stories.”I began writing when I was in high school. I wanted to be a baseball player…so I wrote a poem about baseball and showed it to my dad…it was in the sports section of the local paper! That day, I traded my baseball bat for a pencil.” I asked him what his favorite book of his own was. “The first one that was ever published…because there’s something magical about knowing that you have contributed to the world in your book.” Are there any plans for future books? Yes, says Mr. Spinelli. “I’m currently writing a book with my wife for the firsttime. It’ll…be nonfiction but…I don’t know the title yet, because there isn’t a title yet.” We finished our group converstation with this quote, “The Golden Rule of Writing is always write what you care about.”
