Get Out Your Binoculars!

Mary Anne Porto writes, A great mystery…

A great mystery, Sammy Keyes and the Hotel Thief, is a surprising fast paced novel about an average middle-schooler who has a thing for mysteries. Sammy is spying from her apartment window in the Senior Highrise, she isn’t allowed to be there, so whenever the doorbell rings, she has to hide in her Grams closet. Her mom ran off to Hollywood to become an actress, and she has never met her dad, she had nowhere to go. Grams told her not to use those binoculars, and when Sammy sees a hotel thief across the street, she decides that her Grams is right. When the thief eyes Sammy, she does something really dumb… she waves. Sammy isn’t doing the best at school either. On the first day of junior high, Sammy was doing fine, until Heather Acosta, Sammy’s worst enemy, sits by her at lunch. Heather acts as innocent as she can, then walks behind her and pokes her in the rear end with a sharp needle. The only thing Sammy can do is start screaming “Heather! Owwwwwwwww!”, everyone laughs at Sammy, and she gets so mad she punches Heather in the nose. When the vice principal Mr. Caan comes along, Sammy tries to convince him it’s all Heather’s fault, but Sammy gets suspended. The book is really funny and exciting and the thief is so unexpected. I think this book is great for mystery lovers 9-13 years old. Sammy Keyes and the Hotel Thief is the first book of the Sammy Keyes series. The author, Wendelin Van Drannen did a great job of detailing all the events. When in need of a great mystery I would recommend Sammy Keyes and the Hotel Thief.
