Arriana Salma Belkin writes, The first American Thanksgiving was celebrated in 1621.

The first American Thanksgiving was celebrated in 1621. The pilgrims who had come over on the Mayflower landed sometime during the month of December of 1620. They managed to survive a rough and harsh winter. Thanksgiving commemorates the rich harvest gathered by the Plymouth Colony, or the settlement made by the Pilgrims on the coast of Massachusetts in 1620, after the harsh winter. The Pilgrims’ first Thanksgiving began at some unknown date between September the twenty-first and November the ninth, most likely in very early October. It included eighty-one Indian guests because they were the ones who helped the pilgrims survive the previous winter. Today, Thanksgiving is the fourth Thursday in November. This date was set by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1939. He changed it from Abraham Lincoln’s designation as the last Thursday in November. Unlike other holidays such as New Year’s Eve, the Fourth of July and Halloween, Thanksgiving is normally celebrated at home with family and friends. One of the most common traditions of this holiday is give thanks to what we appreciate most. What do you appreciate most? Family? Friends? Also, families and friends enjoy a delicious dinner. It usually consists of traditional Thanksgiving food like turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, biscuits, and more. What do you like to eat for Thanksgiving?
