National Western Stock Show

Rodeo is what people think about the Wild West. My dad received three tickets to The National Western Stock Show to see the rodeo, so we went there last Friday. The National Western Stock Show is held every January at the National Western Complex in Denver, Colorado. This event started in 1906, and it is one of the world’s largest stock shows. The stock show’s motto is “To preserve the western lifestyle by providing a showcase for the agricultural industry through emphasis on education, genetic development, innovative technology and offering the world’s largest agricultural marketing opportunities.”The Horse Shows at the annual National Western Stock Show are among the largest in the world with more than 18,000 entries at the 2006 event, including Quarter Horses, Paint Horses, Hunters & Jumpers, USEF Open Horse Shows, Mules Shows and the Draft Horse Show & Pull. The Friday night event which my dad and my friend attended featured bare back riding, bull riding, tie-down roping, steer wrestling, team roping, barrel riding, and the most fun of all, bull fighting. Bull riding is one of the best symbols for rodeo in the west. Riders are required to stay on an angry bull for eight seconds with only one hand. I think this requires the most endurance since with the bull jumping up and down; it is very easy to break the back or an arm. Bare back riding is very similar to bull riding except for the fact that instead of riding a bull, riders ride a very unkind horse.I loved bull fighting because of its uniqueness and technicality. Dealing with a bull can be very dangerous; one miss step could lead to death. Fortunately, the performers are all masters at their jobs. The only skills needed are speed and reflex. Three professionals will try to avoid the bull’s attacks while perform more tricks. It is very heart breaking to see a guy go down because with no help, the bull could kill you with its horns and body. All three brave fighters escaped with little harm and they put up an amazing show for us to watch.I am glad that I came to watch the show and experience the rich culture of the old western towns. I definitely enjoy the battle between men and animal.
