US athletes crowned kings and queens of the beach

Emma Carroll writes, Latvia was a great wake up call.

Latvia was a great wake up call. Latvia’s beach volleyball team beat Phil Dalhausser and teammate Todd Rogers in the preliminary rounds of mens beach volleyball. That’s when it really sank in that the team had to start performing. They did just that. With the gold medal at stake on August 22, Dalhausser and Rogers defeated Brazil’s Marcio Araujo and Fabio Luiz two sets to one (23-21, 17-21, 15-4) in a match slightly over an hour at Chaoyang Park Beach Volleyball Grounds for the gold medal. Both Dalhausser and Rogers did their part. Of Dalhausser’s blocking power, Rogers said, “Everybody fears it. In the third set he just got on a roll.” Dalhausser had five kills, four digs, and one ace. Rogers held up his own however with 24 kills and four digs. Dalhausser and Rogers are only the third US men’s team to win gold in beach volleyball.Dalhausser and Rogers were not the only ones to make history at Chaoyang Park. On August 21st, the dynamic women’s duo of Kerri Walsh and Misty May-Treanor became repeat gold medalist after sweeping China’s top-ranked Tian Jia and Wang Jie (21-18, 21-18) in the pouring rain.”We felt like warriors out there. It’s an honor to win this gold medal. It was a team effort.” Kerri Walsh said of the hard-fought match.Walsh and May-Treanor had not lost a match or set in Olympic competition and hold a winning streak of 108 games. No other Olympic team has one two beach volleyball gold medals.”Kerri and I knew it the minute the ball dropped in Athens. We want to repeat as champions,” Misty said. “We want to be Olympic gold medalists again. No one has ever done it.”May-Treanor and Walsh had 33 kills, ten more than the Chinese team, two aces and six digs. The Chinese had five aces, but only five digs. It was a close game, but the Americans closed it out in the pouring rain in front of a crowd of 12,200.It was indeed an exciting week for US beach volleyball, and a great effort by both teams. One world, one dream.
