America’s favorite game is almost here! Baseball spring training has started off with a bang as professional baseball teams compete in Arizona and Florida. Preseason is a great time for minor league players to show what they’ve got to the coaches of the ball-teams in hopes of making it to the majors this season. Most of the players will return to the minors, but a few lucky ones will stay. Spring training is also a good time for professionals to shake off some rust from the past off-season. The Colorado Rockies are one of the many teams that are playing in Arizona. I got the chance to go to one of their games against the Chicago Cubs and I interviewed Rockies second-baseman and occasionally their shortstop Clint Barmes. I asked him how Don Baylor, who is the Rockies hitting coach and who managed the Rockies from 1993 to 1998, was helping the batting of the team. Barmes replied that Coach Baylor is very wise when it comes to hitting and is the person that each player can ask questions to when they are struggling. Hopes are high for this year’s season for the Rockies. Many of the injured players last year are back like Todd Helton, Troy Tulowitski, and Ryan Spilborghs. Matt Holiday will be missed, but the line up for this year has a few home-run hitters on it. The pitching staff this year also looks promising. Nearly every kid who lays baseball has a dream to play in the major leagues. All of the players in the majors had a goal to be in the pros. That determination is the reason that they are where they are today. They didn’t quit and they also worked hard and practiced a lot. Clint Barmes suggests just that for all kids and that you don’t have to stand out when you’re a kid to be a good player. “I didn’t really stand out when I played Little League or even through high school,” Barmes said, “It was my sophomore year in college that I gained some strength and skill in baseball.” The Rockies enter the season playing against the Arizona Diamondbacks on April 6. They play at Coors Field on April 10 against the Philadelphia Philly’s.
