Journey back to the glory days of 1899, in New York City, where the wealthy class dominates the social columns. Or, if you don’t happen to have a time machine, read the Luxe Series by Anna Godberson. Currently, they top the “Rachel Faulkner list of must-reads” (for full list, see my blog). The first book starts off with a funeral for Elizabeth Holland, an eighteen year old social beauty. Quiet and ladylike, she has been mysteriously cast into the waters of the Hudson River. Then we go backwards in time, to tell the story of Elizabeth’s death. On the outside, Elizabeth seems perfect, but on the inside she carriesa dangerous secret. Suddenly, she is blackmailed into a loveless engagement. Her backstabbing best friend, Penelope, is harboring a deep resentment towards Elizabeth, made only worse when Elizabeth makes a certain announcement with Penelope’s secret love, the dashing Henry Schoonmaker. Meanwhile, Elizabeth’s younger sister Diana finds her heart being captured by Henry, but only one thing stands in her way: her older sister. I cannot tell you what the second book, Rumors, or the third, Envy, is about without giving away something huge, but I promise that you will love them all. The books are fast-paced and absolutely packed with drama, scandal, love, humor, and wit. Some parts are slightly innappropriate, so I reccomend it for ages 12 and up. You will not be able to put it down!
