A lot of elementary schools still have field day, but our school put a new twist on things. We had 13 events all to do with books. There were educational books, like Crazy Alphabet and Home Run, and silly books like Arnie The Doughnut and Skeleton Hiccups. The event for Crazy Alphabet was to run down the field and collect items in a basket, then put them all in alphabetical order. The book Arnie The Doughnut, we had to run with a tire and bowl down pins. My favorite event was seeing how many baskets I could get in basketball after the book Allie’s Basketball Dream. My brother’s (Tommy) favorite event was the 50 yard dash, after the book The Pumpkin Runner. He got a red ribbon for that race. My friend Alesya loved the relay race after the book The Runaway Dinner. She said ” We all worked together and finished the race”. It was nice to see a new way of doing field day. Some of the books were for 1st and 2nd graders, but that was O.K. It was just fun to see all the kids have such a good time. And they didn’t even know they were learning. Thank you to all the teachers and parents who helped put this together and gave up some of their time to help.
