Alice in Lace is part of a series of books about Alice, a spunky 13-year old girl. In Alice in Lace, by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor, Alice and her classmates receive realistic life situations in which they have to make decisions for a Critical Choices unit in health class. Alice and her boyfriend Patrick are getting married, going on a honeymoon, and starting a home, with a budget of $5,000. Others in the class have a DWI offense, were caught shoplifting, got a girl pregnant, became pregnant, had to buy a car, had to arrange a funeral, and many other situations. In and out of the classroom they learn how their choices affect themselves and the people around them. I would recommend this book for people ages 9 – 13. It was entertaining (not preachy) and the characters and their actions were believable and funny. Alice in Lace, published by Aladdin Mix, had me hooked from the beginning of its 139 pages. I’m planning to follow Alice in her continuing adventures!
