In 6th grade you might have the chance to experience something called “Outdoor Education” (or Outdoor Ed). You go to the mountains for two or three days to learn survival skills like building shelters and reading maps and using a compass. You also learn a lot about nature and wildlife. I recently went with my class from Century Middle School and had a great time! We stayed at the YMCA of the Rockies in Estes Park. The teachers and high school leaders supervising us sure kept us busy! The first day was a lot of fun. We built shelters with tarps and sticks. We talked about wildlife and how they survive in their habitat during all four seasons. We went to dinner in the cafeteria and the food was really good! After that, we did night groups. Three different groups went on night hikes and we got to go inside a blow up planetarium! Finally, when the night was over, my room mates and I headed to our tiny warm cabin (or dorm ) to get some sleep in our cozy beds. In the morning after breakfast, we hiked and did somthing called the “High Ropes Course”. We had to climb up pretty high on a tree that had special staples to put our feet on (we held on to the harness the whole time). Then we had to decide if we wanted to complete the rope course at the bottom, middle or top. I chose bottom after seeing how high the middle and top courses were! It was still very fun! We kept field journals during the trip to record our activities and everything we learned. If you like camping or even if you don’t, you’ll still have a great time at Outdoor Ed. It’s fun to see your teachers in a different setting and you get to have fun with your friends. You can even make some new friends! It was a great experience. It was nice, though, to come home to my family, a hot bath and my mom’s cooking!
