Ever wonder about what kinds of houses ancient civilizations lived in or what kind of food they ate? Take a trip to MesaVerdeNational Park to find out. My family took a trip to Mesa Verde, located in Southwest Colorado. To see the cliff dwellings in Mesa Verde, there are two options- take a park ranger guided tour or go on ‘self guided’ ones. The Park Rangers who lead the tours made a big difference because each of them had a different view on the history of the people who built and lived in the ancient cliff dwellings. The ‘self guided’ tours are nice to do because you can take your time, but be aware that these dwellings might be crowded. My favorite part of the trip was doing the Twilight Tour of Cliff Palace, (the largest dwelling you can tour). It was a smaller group and an extended time so I got a longer tour of CliffPalace. For kids ages four to twelve, the Jr. Ranger program is worth doing. From Cliff Dwelling Bingo to visiting the museum, the Jr. Ranger booklet is packed with activities to do. Once you’ve finished the activity book, turn it into a ranger and get your badge that certifies you are a Mesa Verde Jr. Ranger. If you take a trip to Mesa Verde this summer, you must take along the following items:·WATER!!·Good hiking shoes·Sunscreen·Hat·Layers-The temperature is cool in the morning but is hot during the day.Keep an eye out for wandering horses, snakes, and lizards.
