If you were chosen to fight to the death, how would you feel? You probably wouldn’t feel too good-more likely, horrible. That’s exactly how sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark felt in The Hunger Games written by Suzanne Collins. In a country called Panem, a girl and boy citizen for each of the twelve districts are chosen to compete in the annual Hunger Games. The Hunger Games were games organized by the Capitol after an uprising by all the districts decades ago and are organized for the Capitol’s pleasure. For each Hunger Games, the tributes are put in an arena until only one of them survives.Katniss Everdeen’s twelve-year-old sister, Prim, was chosen one year. Prim was the person Katniss loved the most. To save her life, she volunteered for Prim and became a contestant of the Seventy-fourth Hunger Games. She would have to leave her family, friends-especially her best friend Gale-and all of District 12, maybe never coming back again. The other tribute was Peeta Mellark. Peeta was a baker’s son who Katniss didn’t know much. However, they soon became friends in the arena and, even though only one tribute could live, tried to fight their way out of it together. The Hunger Games is a suspense-filled novel full of friendship, survival, a little romance, and science fiction. Even if the topic may seem a little gory to you, for the most part, it isn’t as bad as it seems. It’s sequel is Catching Fire and both are recommended for ages 12 and up. The whole book will have you wondering who will survive: Peeta, Katniss, or neither of them? The third and final book, Mockingjay, will be released on August 24, 2010.

  1. I read this book and I do…
I read this book and I don’t think this review acurately described the book and its themes. You could have been more specific and explained the situation more.
