The USA Basketball Men's National Team is headed to Istanbul, Turkey on a good note! The Weekend of August 14th and 15th Team U.S.A played in New York at Madison Square Garden for the World Basketball Festival. They scrimmaged China and won 98-51. Then played France and won 86-51 at the end of that game Chauncey Billups awarded the most valuable player (MVP) of the game. Before The USA Basketball Men's National Team goes to Turkey they have to play in Spain and Greece. Before they left I got a chance to interview a couple of the players on Team U.S.A., Chauncey Billups, point guard for the Denver Nuggets, and Rudy Gay, forward for the Memphis Grizzles.
Is it hard to develop the kind of on-the-floor communication you would have with your regular teammates when you don't play together all the time? "Yes, It is. It's difficult because I'm not playing with players that I'm familiar with. It takes sometime to learn everyone's personality and style of play."
How is it different from an All-Star Game? "The All-Star game is all for fun. This is a team full of young NBA Stars playing serious to represent our country."
Do you expect to see some friends or teammates at the tournament? "Yes, I do. One of my current teammates plays, Renaldo Balkman for Puerto Rico. Carlos Arroyo also plays for Puerto Rico and we played together for the Detroit Pistons."
Are you looking forward to visiting a different part of the world, or will it be a distraction from the game? " No distraction at all. Yes, Looking forward to visiting different countries and a different culture!"
During this trip what place are you most looking forward to visiting and why? "I'm most excited to visit Spain because I've heard so many great things about it and I've never been there before!"
How is it going to feel being away from your family for about a month? "That's the only part about the trip that I'm not looking forward to because I can't bring them with me. Thank goodness for Skype though!"
Is it hard to develop the kind of on-the-floor communication you would have with your regular teammates when you don't play together all the time? "Yes, It's hard sometimes but I kind of grew up with these players so we get along well!"
Is this your first international experience as a professional? "Yes, It is. I'm very excited."
Do you expect to see some friends or teammates at the tournament? "Yes, one of my teammates plays for Iran and I'm sure I'll see some other friends from the NBA."
Are you looking forward to visiting a different type of the world, or will it be a distraction from the game? "I'm really looking forward to going to visiting Greece. I heard it's beautiful."
Will this international experience help you during the regular season? "I think it will because all the games are going to mean so much just like the play-offs but just as important if not more because we're representing our country and that's a great honor."
What team are you most excited to play and why? "I'm most excited about playing against Spain because one of my former teammates plays for them. His name is Carlos Navearo."
