After being one of ten students in my elementary school to attend the ground breaking ceremony of the new Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM) building last spring I wanted to find out what the STEM building was all about and who would benefit from it. After talking to my Principal Mr. Aratola and the STEM building Executive Director, Mr. Richard Charles, I got the answersto my questions. The new Cherry CreekSchool District STEM building is located between Praire Middle School and Overland High School in Aurora, CO. It is divided into four pods, 2 on eachfloor. Each pod will have one large lab, one medium lab and one small lab, for a total of12 pods. Each pod will also have 4 classrooms called studios. There will also be a Sundolier which will allow students to do experiments with the sun. There is an elementary lab dedicated just to elementary school students. Programs offeredat the STEM building are called Career Concentrations(CC) and will allow students to concentrate on a specific area of interest, for example nursing or engineering. There are five concentration centers. The Health Sciences CC will focus on any health related field. The Energy Resource CC will focus on energy related careers. The Math and Computer CC will focus on computer programing. The Art and Technical Communication CC will focus on gaming and creativity. The Engineering CC will focus on engineering. Programs will also concentrate on critical thinking and problem solving skills. Students form all the elementary schools that feed into Praire Middle School, Praire Middle School students as well as Overland High School students will have access to the programs at the STEM building. Programs will begin at the beginning of the 2011-2012 school year. There will be an opening ceremony sometime in August 2011.
