If you follow the sport of MMA, you might know Chris Camozzi, a MMA fighter from Lakewood, Colorado. Chris recently competed on the UFC's show "The Ultimate Fighter". He won his fight on that show, but had to leave the competition due to a broken jaw. The UFC was so impressed with Chris that they gave him a contract to fight more. Chris will fight for the UFC again on October 23rd at UFC 121 in Anaheim, CA. He is competing against Dongi "The Ox" Yang, an undefeated fighter from Korea.
I had a chance to talk to Chris at the gym where he trains, Factory X Muay Thai in Littleton.
What is your favorite part of MMA?
My favorite part of MMA is just being able to compete, train, and stay in shape. Not your normal 9-5 job.
How often do you train?
During camp I train 6 days a week, twice a day.
How important is your team to your training?
My fight team means a lot to me. I need good partners to help me grow and I help them, we all help each other. Having a bunch of guys accessible to train with and build each other up is a big part of this sport.
How long have you been fighting?
I've been fighting for 5 ½ years now.
Where else have you fought besides Colorado?
I've fought in Canada, Las Vegas, Omaha, Iowa and this time I'll be fighting in California.
Do you have a special diet before your fight?
Right now I have a nutritionist at Max Muscle that helps me with my diet. It covers all the basic food groups like vegetables, fruits, carbohydrates, fats and protein.
Do you like to fight at the beginning of the night or at the end?
I would rather fight at the end of the night but for this fight I think I am the first fight of the night so I'll have to get used to that.
What do you do before a fight?
The day of the fight I make sure I drink plenty of water, eat throughout the day so I'm not hungry and rest a lot. About 40 minutes before the fight I hit the pads really hard to blow the air out of my lungs so that when I am in the Octagon I am using my second wind.
Who was your toughest opponent?
Victor O'Donnell, the guy I fought to make it onto the Ultimate Fighter show. It was kind of back and forth all three rounds and I was able to come out with the win. But it was definitely tough!
What was your favorite fight?
My favorite fight was with Chad Reiner here in Denver.
Does your family go to your fights?
Yes, they try to make it to all of them. When I go to Anaheim, my brother, sister, my mom and my girlfriend are going to fly out to watch the fight.
If you could be any superhero, who would you be?
I would be Superman! I would love to have the super strength and fly around, xray vision, he's got it all.
Do you have a fight name?
I don't have a fight name picked out yet, but I need one!
Chris needs your help! Go to his website http://camozzimma.com/ and post your idea for a fight name.
