We have all heard of Chauncey Billups, the great Denver Nuggets player, but did you know he is even more awesome off the court.
We have all heard of Chauncey Billups, the great Denver Nuggets player, but did you know he is even more awesome off the court. Besides giving his financial support, Mr.Billups donates his time to many charities like the Chauncey Billups Elite Basketball Academy. On October 9th, there was a Hoop-A-Thon with all proceeds going to the Elite Basketball Academy.
I got to sit down with Ronnie DeGray (Chief Executive Officer and Coach of the EBA) and I asked, "What does basketball mean to you?" Mr. DeGray said, "Basketball isn't just a sport you train and play for, it provides focus not only on basketball, but in school too. It helps you become a better person and get good grades". He also stated there is a team where you must have a 2.7 grade point average or higher to be on. That's pretty amazing that a coach would pick school over a sport. What a great guy.
My next question to the coach was, "Why did you want to work for this organization?" Mr. DeGray said, "It's been a dream to do this. I love working with kids and I have a blast helping them succeed in a sport I love". Over 40 kids showed up for the first annual Hoop-A-Thon and had a great time. My brother, Tommy, even played on a 3 on 3 team and won. One thing I noticed that made me proud to be a kid was how respectful and sportsmanlike the teams were. It didn't matter if some of the kids were not great at basketball, there team mates made them feel like they couldn't have done it without them.
