Christmas has always been a time of giving. It is at Christmastime that charities are booming with activity and many people are lending a helping hand. "Christmastime is a season of giving", this is what many people say, but have you ever thought about the rest of the year. People in need don't just disappear until Christmastime; they are there all year round. Sometimes, though, we only help out to our greatest extent at Christmastime. We might donate here and there throughout the year, but it is important to help out wherever and whenever there is need, not just in the season of giving.
As Christmas charity events pass and the ball drops in New York City to symbolize a New Year, one could make it their New Year's Resolution to help out more. Here are a few ways in which you could give your time, money, or effort to help those in need for this coming year.
Food is a vital necessity of life. Sometimes, we take it for granted, but, there are people out there who go to bed hungry every night. Many charities will help with food for the poor and/or homeless. These charities are very common, many times; one might find food donation centers at their local school and other community centers. During the year, my school has many opportunities to donate food to those in need. We fill up bags of food for the Saint Vincent de Paul Society once a week and during Thanksgiving we collect food and create Thanksgiving baskets for families in need in Fort Lupton, Colorado. I have been collecting food for these families ever since I was little, but this year I actually got to help deliver them. It was an amazing experience. Food drives and dinners for those in need are very common and easy to get involved in.
Giving your time is another way to help out too. I gave my time this summer by volunteering at an integrated preschool called Sewall. It was a great experience and I really learned a lot. I worked with average and disabled preschoolers there and I had a lot of fun while helping out. Children's hospitals and other hospitals also have volunteer programs for teenagers in which teens can learn help out and learn a lot. There are many other programs in which everyone can get involved and lend a helping hand.
Sometimes it is difficult to give time to help out, so some people may just want to donate a little money to the charity of their choice. There are thousands of charities to choose from and find a cause that you are interested in. Just a little bit of money can go a long way. Fundraisers are always a good way to raise some money in a creative way. Some are races while others might be auctions or dinners. Fundraisers are great ways to get involved in a cause while having a good time.
It is important to give all year round and with these helpful hints, you can give throughout the year and at Christmastime.
