Sophia Becker writes, “It [Kanga Klaus] shows the true meaning of Christmas, which is giving, not getting,” My sister Elizabeth Becker said.

“It [Kanga Klaus] shows the true meaning of Christmas, which is giving, not getting,” My sister Elizabeth Becker said. And she captured the true meaning of this book when she said that. The rhyming 39-page picture book combines animals and Christmas in a different way than you’d expect. Herman the Red Kangaroo (Santa’s helper) wants to become Kanga Klaus. He must carry out all the requests Santa gave him in order to become Kanga Klaus. When I asked my seven-year-old sister, Gretchen what she thought the book was saying, she replied, “It’s kind of saying that giving is more important than getting, but I just don’t get the Kanga Klaus part.”The Kanga Klaus part was most likely to add a little more Christmas cheer to the book, and to explain how the animals got their presents. I had the chance to e-interview Susan Harman, one of the authors of Kanga Klaus. The idea for this book was her idea originally. “I have wanted to write and publish this story since I was a child and lived on a farm, over 60 years ago,” says Harman, “A love for animals and orphan children gave me the inspiration to write this story. Growing up on a farm I always wondered if the animals ever got anything for Christmas. My parents died when I was young and I was raised by my aunt. “Kanga Klaus is Harman’s favorite book she’s written. She even said, “Absolutely, this is my favorite book,” when I asked her if it was. I also asked her what her favorite part of the book was, and what her favorite part of writing this book was. She replied, “My favorite part of this book was selecting the animals’ gifts and their wishes for Christmas,” and, “My favorite part of this book was writing it with my son, Eric Harman, and choosing the gifts which the animals would want for Christmas.”I give this book four out of five stars. Reading Kanga Klaus will definitely get you into the Christmas spirit!
