On January 24, Platte River Academy was proud to be the first school in Colorado to offer Kidproof's Cyber Safety assembly. While Kidproof Safety has been around for over ten years, Kidproof is new to Colorado. Kidproof is North America's largest child safety company that helps children 4-14 make safe choices while having fun. Kidproof classes vary from Stranger Smarts, to Bully Proofing, to Babysitting, plus a number of others.
Students at Platte River Academy really enjoyed the Cyber Safe assembly. Eighth-grader Jill Joseph commented, "We were shown what could possibly happen in the real world and how to protect ourselves."
The things that can happen are more surprising than you think, especially since middle schoolers spend so much time online. Molly McCloskey, a sixth grader, said, "The assembly taught kids what not to do when you get a cell phone or a Facebook account."
Eighth grader Nick Johns replied, "I learned why it is important not to talk to people online that I have not met face-to-face." These are all important lessons that we sometimes forget.
At the Kidproof seminar, one of the things we learned was just like in person, bullying online hurts victims, too.
To better understand this point, the Kidproof instructor had me squeeze out a tube of toothpaste onto a plate. After I emptied the tube, I attempted to put the toothpaste back in the tube which was impossible! This activity showed that even online, you cannot take back what you say or what you send. The Cyber Safe assembly taught me I have to be careful what I say or post online because I can never fully take it back.
The Cyber Safe program is not the only class Kidproof offers. Check out www.kidproofsafety.com for a complete listing of classes in the area or contact firstname.lastname@example.org to bring Kidproof classes to your school! Kidproof safety instructors know how to connect with students to help them learn how to be safe in a fun way. When I got home from school, I told my parents to sign me up for more Kidproof classes.
