Patricia Polacco is a famous writer and illustrator of children's books, with a spectacular style. She just published a new book, "Just in time, Abraham Lincoln."

She held a book signing session at the Bookies on Saturday February 12th, where over a hundred people came to see her. Afterwards, I got to interview her.

Mrs. Polacco's books have many animals in them. In her real life, she owns thirteen goats, thirty-six cats, three sheep, two dogs and one horse. They seem to be good models for her artwork. She draws outside many times. She often goes out and draws people's faces on the bus. She likes going on a long walk to draw.

Patricia Polacco uses 6b and 2b pencils, because those are very dark. She also uses Pentel markers and acrylic paints.

Patricia Polacco enjoys writing and telling stories. There are many family stories in her books.

She started writing twenty-five years ago, when she was forty-one. Many years before that, she started drawing. She was five years old.

Patricia Polacco has not always planned to be a writer. She wanted to be an artist, a painter or a sculptor. However, her family is a family of storytellers. She started writing the stories down, so she guesses she is more of a storyteller than a writer. Thinking up the stories is the easy part of her work. Writing down the stories is harder for Mrs. Polacco.

She does not use a computer because she has a learning disability, and she can't see the cursor. She uses an electric typewriter; she has seven of them in her basement, because they can break and pretty soon you won't be able to buy them anymore.

Mrs. Polacco does not have a favorite book out of her own books. She said, "They are a little bit like children to me, I love all of them equally." She really likes the ones with drawings of dead family members, because the drawings bring them back to life. And if you read about them, they also become alive for you.

She likes the work of other authors such as Jerry Pinkney, Eric Carle, Bob SanSouci, and Avi.

Patricia Polacco told me about her newest book, "Just in Time, Abraham Lincoln." It is about two boys who travel back to the time of the civil war.

Patricia also told me that she just finished writing and illustrating a book for very young children, called "Bun Bun Button." She loved it very much because she got to draw many pictures of little children in old-fashioned clothing.
