Have you ever had a field trip that you were so anxious for that you couldn't sleep the night before? Well…I have, and it was worth the sleepless night.

Have you ever had a field trip that you were so anxious for that you couldn't sleep the night before? Well…I have, and it was worth the sleepless night.

My 5th grade class at Ranch Creek Elementary School took a trip to Young Ameritowne. Ameritowne is a miniature town where you get to act like a grown up and learn about economics and how to handle money.

When we arrived at the Young Ameritowne building, we were drawn into a whole new world. There was 17 stores surrounding a town square. Everyone was assigned a job, and I was elected Mayor. My experience was phenomenal. I took the oath of office and presented the opening ceremony speech. I even got to cut the ribbon with a huge pair of scissors.

As the Mayor, I had to sign business licenses for every shop in town and post them on their store's bulletin board. During my work day I had a chance to go around to all of the businesses in town spending my "money". We used our debit card, checkbook and Ameritowne cash at every store. Some of my favorite stores were Parcel Service, Bank and the Towne Hall. Sophie Collins, another participant from my class said "My Ameritowne experience was the best. My favorite store was the bank."I was stationed in Towne Hall. I shared an office with the Judge, Accountant, Community Relations Director and two Police Officers. If the judge was on break, I had to fill in for her and got the chance to tell the accused if they were guilty or innocent. (They were all guilty).During our lunch break, we ate in the towne square and watched our TV commercials and listened to the radio.

After lunch we held a contest. Citizens of Ameritowne were asked to design a stamp representing their experience with Ameritowne and I got to pick the winner. At the end of our day at Ameritowne, I gave out certificates to all of the store managers and from their faces I could tell that they had a great time.

I believe this experience is great for any 5th grade class. I hope everyone will feel the same excitement I felt after a day at Ameritowne. That night I slept like a baby!!
