If you would ask kids today what is your favorite game to play, you might hear Play Stations, X-Box, Texting on cell phones, computer games, and DS's. But if you were to ask kids 50 years ago, I think there would be a BIG difference. I sat down with my Grandma Vicky and asked what did you play when you were my age? She said, "First let me think, it's been a little while" ha, ha, ha. "I loved to play with my trucks, make mudpies, and go swimming, but my favorite thing to play with my friend was marbles".
I never knew marbles was a game, I thought it was something people collected or used in flower arrangements. My Grandma said" It was the biggest thing at school, we couldn't wait till recess and see if we could knock out the other persons marbles and take over their collection". Wow, that sounds like fun. She said we all named our shooter marbles (the biggest marble that knocks out all the little marbles) hers was named Peetie the Destroyer. It was great to sit down and talk to my Grandma about the past. Usually we joke and ask if she had a T.V. or paved roads on the farm. Just think, the games she used to play are still here. You can still get a bag of marbles for $2.99 and order a shooter marble in any size or color.
Instructions on how to play marbles…
#1. Draw a circle 2 to 3 feet wide with chalk on asphalt, concrete, or dirt. (Make sure it is a flat area)
#2. Place any marbles you wish to play in the target area. Pick your shooter ( The largest marble) to knock out other marbles.
#3. Pick who goes first and take turns shooting marbles out of target. Try not to shoot for your marbles because the person with the most marbles wins.
Remember in playing this game, make sure everyone knows you are playing for fun or keepsies. You don't want to make anyone mad.
