If you were given a choice between being a vampire or being human, what would you choose? This is the question that seventeen year old Mina Hamilton has to decide in Sucks to be me, by Kimberley Pauley. Mina has lived with vampires her whole life, and she thinks she knows what to expect. The problem starts when the Vampire Council realizes that her family isn’t normal. Mina, her parents, and her uncle Mortie tell the Council that Mina doesn’t know about them, but the Council still says that Mina must choose what she wants to be. Mina is forced to attend weekly “lessons” on what it would be like to be a vampire, to guide her towards the right path. Along the way to (maybe) becoming a bloodsucker, she faces many hardships, which she rights down in a list entitled “Why it sucks to be me.” Her problems are a guaranteed excuse to laugh out loud. What will she choose? read Sucks to be me to find out! I liked this book a lot, especially because the characters are funny and likable, and you can imagine that they are real people. The plot is unusual, and you can relate to many of the problems that the characters face. You’ll laugh your way through the whole book, and when it’s over, you’ll find yourself wishing it wasn’t that it would go on forever. I would recommend this book to grade seven and up, because of brief mild language.
