On July 30, 2011, the Ken-Caryl Equestrian Center held a free public event for all of it’s residents to enjoy. First, they started with a horse show with people riding their horses through obstacles. The obstacles that were there were mainly jumps. For young kids, they had pony rides and a petting zoo. The pony rides were set up like a carousel and 5 children were allowed on at a time. The ponies rode in a small circle, and all were very steady and calm. As for the petting zoo, the animals were also calm with the new recruits. There was a great selection of animals including a tortoise, several sheep, a young cow, two ducks, a rabbit, and a llama. At the end of the day, the tortoise did in fact seem quite annoyed! The llama was so soft it had about and inch of fur on his back. The animals were very good about being patient with the children –that is, until one of the goats saw my notebook and ate my notes! But that wasn’t the only thing that happened. At one o’clock p.m., a dog agility show took place in one of the horse arenas and the dogs would do things like wriggling their way through some kid play equipment. This included a small structure with stairs and a slide! They had different types of dogs, too. There was even a chihuahua who participated. The second place winner of the large dogs was a 4 month old black lab named Lucy. She did everything great… and barely came out behind first place. For third place, Lucy’s sister, Bella, won. Their owner, Wendi, said that she always came one behind her twin. “They love agility training.” she explained. ” And the key is to practice.” And practice they did! According to her, they built jumps out of PVC piping and also went to agility training class. In short, I think that the Equestrian Center’s event was a big hit!
