I got an opportunity to go to my mom's work and to see the state court judicial branch in action. It was amazing! I learned what it would be like to be selected on as a juror on a jury trial. I participated in a mock trial for kids. It was the case of the Big Bad Wolf and the Three Little Pigs, a handful of kids were selected to be jurors and to sit in the jury box. Other kids were selected to fill other positions required for a jury trial such as a judge, prosecutor (the pigs), defendant (the wolf), attorneys, and courtroom deputy. The mock trial was actually like a real Jury Trial. I participated as a juror where we had to make a decision when the trial was over as to whether the wolf was innocent or guilty.

Next, I went to the Pioneer Museum where there were two Police officers sitting on horses and two police officers each with their canine. They told us all about Police Horses and the K-9 units. They talked about how the horses were trained to respond and react to what the Officers commanded. The K-9 units I thought were the best because they have the a strong sense of smell in order to find things. The Officers talked about the training involved for police dogs and police horses. The one cool fact is that K-9 dogs are trained to find things such as weapons or drugs. When they do find something they are trained to lay down next to it without touching it because it may be a weapon, like a gun,and if the dog picks it up they could accidentally shot themselves or an Officer. I thought that was really interesting.

The last part of my tour of the courthouse was going with the Sheriff Deputies on a tour of the jail holding cells. This is where inmates stay waiting to go to court and to be seen by a Judge. The Deputies talked about the Innkeepers. Some Innkeepers wear different vests to identify what crime they committed. We even had the opportunity to go inside a jail cell with nobody in it. I would never want to be in there.

At the end of the day we gathered around for pizza and to talk with the Chief Judge. He told us about some of the funniest and most interesting cases that he has ever heard. He said one time there was a defendant that got caught and arrested for having drugs in his underwear and the defendant told the Judge that the underwear was not his.

If you can ever get the chance to go to your local State Judicial Court I would strongly recommend it. I had a blast and so will you.
