Meet Jamie. A seventeen-year-old teenage girl who is a pill addict and needs a new start. Little Bly, a tiny island in New England is the perfect opportunity. In "Tighter, " Jamie is Isa's new au pair, or nanny. Jamie's first week as an au pair starts out completely normal; she meets Isa's "bad boy" older brother, Milo, and their mean housekeeper, Connie. After a while, Jamie gets curious and asks Isa where her old au pair, Jessie, went. She's shocked to hear Isa reply, "Jessie's dead." It turns out that she died in a plane crash. Jamie starts seeing things like a boy and a girl jumping off a cliff and an unknown boy playing with Isa. No one will give her any answers. Jamie takes things into her own hands by doing a little research. She finds out that Jessie's boyfriend, Peter, was also with her the day she crashed. Jamie discovers that Peter talked to his mom the day before they crashed. She must have the answers that Jamie's been looking for, but what if she has no answers?
"Tighter," by Adele Griffin, is a "National Book Award Finalist." It is 216 pages long; a very quick read. I was hooked right from the start. This book always kept me guessing. Because of this, I finished this story in about five days. "Tighter" had a very confusing, yet satisfying ending. I had to reread part of the chapters to make sense of things. However, some nights chills ran down my spine because of the creepy stuff that happened to Jamie and I just had to keep reading. If you liked the TV show Lost, or enjoy creepy and mysterious books, "Tighter" would be a very good book to read.
