There are many misconceptions about global warming. Some people think it totally makes sense and some people think it's a stupid thing a scientist made up.
There are many misconceptions about global warming. Some people think it totally makes sense and some people think it's a stupid thing a scientist made up. I am here to tell you that global warming is a scary occurrence and is on pace to affect the arctic at an alarming rate. The polar ice cap is the main body of ice that spans out from the Arctic Circle. The production of greenhouse gases is causing it to melt. Some scientists believe that the ice will be gone by 2061. This is affecting the arctic marine ecosystem and is threatening the existence of some of its largest and cutest animals.
The caribou is a large animal that lives on the arctic tundra. Their diet consists of mostly grass. They use their large hooves to dig through the snow. This makes it so they can feed on grass. When the snow becomes too packed, they move to the coast which contains grass beneath the half frozen ice. Since the ice is melting, they can't complete their grazing period. This is causing them too lose weight.
The arctic fox lives in northern parts of Canada. Their diet consists of lemmings, carrions, and any rodent that walks their path. Because of warmer temperatures in southern Canada, the red fox is moving north to a more suitable environment. This is causing an overlapping habitat between the species. They are now fighting for territory.
The walrus is a very heavy animal with extremely large tusks. They feed on animals that live on the ocean floor. Walrus swim out to ice caps for a place to socialize. They also use ice caps as diving platforms. They jump off the ice and swim to the ocean floor where they capture their prey. Their diet usually consists of clams. Since the sea ice is melting, the walrus must dive off shore where they can only find smaller clams with less nutritional value. Today, walrus weigh 40 kilograms less than they did forty years ago.
The polar bear lives all around the arctic. Climate change and global warming are affecting them at an alarming rate. These bears feed by waiting patiently next to holes in the sea ice for ringed seals. The sea ice is melting which is causing them to move to land faster. For every week a polar bear is on land, they lose 10 kilograms of fat. Polar bears are beginning to feed on walrus. Walrus are much harder to catch because of their weight and tusks. The polar ice cap is melting fast. Polar bears will be condensed into a much smaller space. This will cause polar bears to become cannibals due to less space. With the ice melting fast, polar bears are forced to swim longer distances from ice cap to ice cap. Many polar bears are drowning and becoming weak.
