Percy Jackson can't remember anything. He has been fighting gorgons the past few days, but they never die, and neither does he. He arrives at Camp Jupiter carrying an old lady. Hazel and Frank, the current guards of the camp, escort him to the Little Tiber, the guardian river of Camp Jupiter. After saving both of his new friends lives from the gorgons, and entering the camp, the old lady turns into Juno. (Greek name:Hera) Juno informs the camp that Percy is the son of Neptune (Poseidon) and disappears.
Percy is accepted into the fifth cohort, the group of kids everybody laughs at. Later that night, while the camp is doing war camps, similar to capture-the-flag, Percy and his new-found friends, Hazel and Frank, who are also in the fifth cohort, work together to defeat the other cohorts. Percy amazes everyone in camp with his power over water. However, during the war games a girl named Gwen is killed. After everyone is sure she's dead, she wakes up again. The same thing has been happening with monsters. They can not be killed.
At the same time, Mars (Ares) appears, ordering Frank, Percy, and Hazel to go on a quest to free Thanatos, the god of death. Nico, who is visiting the camp as "Pluto's Ambassador" (Hades) explains that his dad runs the Underworld, but Thanatos is the one who keeps everyone dead. He is imprisoned in "the land beyond the gods", or as we call it, Alaska. Mars then gives Frank a magic spear, and disappears.
Besides all this, Thanatos must be freed before the Feast of Fortuna, which is June 24, in four days. On that day Alcyoneus's, the one holding him captive, armies will reach Camp Jupiter. If Thanatos isn't freed by then, none of the monsters will die, and the camp will be doomed. Alcyoneus is a giant, one of Gaea's (the earth goddess) twelve children who were made to oppose the gods. Each god has his/her own giant meant specifically to oppose him/her. Alcyoneus is meant to oppose Pluto. The giants are even harder to defeat than the Titans, and, in order to kill them, both gods and demigods must work together. But the gods have no power in Alaska. How will Percy, Hazel, and Frank defeat Alcyoneus? How will they free Thanatos? Will they make it in time? Will Percy get his memory back? Will Camp Jupiter survive?
"The Son of Neptune" is the latest book in the Heroes of Olympus series. This is the follow-up series to the Percy Jackson books. Written by Rick Riordan, this book is just as good as the rest of Riordan's books. It goes back and forth between Percy, Hazel, and Frank's point of view, though it does not use first person.
You do not need to have read the Percy Jackson series, but it does help, and it is necessary to have read the first Heroes of Olympus, which is called "The Lost Hero," to understand. It is also easier to understand if you know Roman as well as Greek mythology. I would recommend this book to anyone who liked the first series, or the first book of the new series. This is a great sequel, and it leaves readers hungry for more of Riordan's delightful work.
