Is open lab an effective way of helping with getting your work done? If you've missed too many days of school could you go to Open lab and get extra help? Is the tutoring in the LIC really helping students? I asked students in Carmody Middle School in Lakewood Colorado this very question. I got very interesting answers. Are you getting enough time in class or is Open Lab a good way of having your own time to finish work?
Open Lab is Mondays and Wednesdays from 2:00 pm to 2:55 pm. Students can come into any class unless closed that day for extra help with any work. They can either get caught up or finish the work they did that day to get ahead. Some students go to Open Lab for work, but others have to go in for detention. After sixth period they can go get their things they need for Open lab then they go straight to the class they need to go. It's not just for struggling students, anyone can go. Teachers give their time to work with students to help them raise their grades or get extra help.
I think it is a great way to help the kids at CMS raise their grades, and help with struggling classes. If you need help with core classes there is always free tutoring in the LIC. To go to Open Lab you need to talk to the teacher(s) but, you will need to talk to make sure they are able to work. Students can choose to stay after school or the teacher might suggest they stay so they can get a good report. Pressure can be decreased if you just stay an hour after school two days a week. Although it's not always optional but it may help in you many ways.
I asked Sara Richey and Marcos Silva, students from CMS, some questions about their opinion of Open lab and how they feel.
• Is Open Lab Effective?
"No, because even if we get our stuff done it doesn't help us in a big way"
• Have you ever gone to open lab?
"Yes, because I had to finish a test"
• How do you feel about Open lab?
Sara feels like it's a waste of her time if she joins Open Lab.
I also asked Marcos Silva the same questions about Open Lab.
• Is Open Lab effective?
"Yes, because it helps people and creates help"
• Have you ever gone to Open Lab?
"Yes, to get caught up on my work."
• How do you feel about Open Lab?
He feels like it's very helpful because it helps kids get their grades up and catch up on things they missed.
I think if we were to give a final answer as, if open lab is effective or not, I think it would be that some students feel like it's an important way of catching up on their work, and the other half thinks it's a waste. I guess you would have to look for yourself whether or not Open Lab is effective in student's lives.
I asked Mrs. Davis in the attendance office if she thought it was effective and she said "Yes because kids get more one on one time with teachers and I only help in Open Lab with writing bus passes.
