Read Write & Brew, a coffee shop in Golden, recently hosted the launch of Bridging the Book: Arthur Collins and the Three Wishes by Linda Pilkington. There were readings and performances from the book. They had a King Arthur trivia contest for gift certificates and other prizes. In addition, the author signed copies of Arthur Collins and the Three Wishes. Special hot drinks and cookies were served while a piano and strings trio provided the music. The event was entertaining for kids of all ages.
Recently published, Bridging the Book is a companion guide that brings Arthur Collins and the Three Wishes to life. It consists of scenes, readings, and narrations from the young adult novel. Pilkington believes that we need to bring the joy of reading back to children and her goal for Bridging the Book is to make reading fun and accessible.
“Bridging the Book helps kids discover the joy of reading. I’ve always suspected that even with well-meaning instruction, reading can turn into work at school. And kids who never see the fun in books aren’t likely to read for pleasure.”
The writer hopes that the guide will be used by teachers, homeschoolers, parents, and library reading programs. She also wants to establish Arthur Collins and the Great American Book Race. This initiative would encourage kids all over the world to form book clubs that read and discuss Arthur Collins and the Three Wishes.
Linda Pilkington is a local author who grew up in Iowa. She has been writing since the age of 14. In school, writing was her favorite subject and she continued to write secretly as an adult. Even her husband didn’t know that she was writing until he saw letters from publishers in their mailbox.
The first draft of Arthur Collins and the Three Wishes was created for a contest and she had only 72 days to complete it. The book was rewritten several times before it was published in late 2010. In the story, a boy named Arthur Collins magically travels back in time to the Great Britain of King Arthur’s childhood. Arthur Collins and Merlin the Wizard team up to stop a plot against the future king. Arthur Collins and the Three Wishes is Pilkington’s first novel for young adults. It is also the first of three in a projected series. She is currently at work on the second book of the trilogy.
